UPDATE: 9-day westbound directional closure schedule changes
The Sherman Minton project team has scheduled multiple directional closures and extended lane restrictions to continue work on the project. Weather permitting, the following restrictions and closures will allow crews to safely continue cable hanger work, permanent striping and other construction activities. If these closures and restrictions are delayed for any reason, notifications will be distributed identifying new times and dates.
Weekend Directional Closure:
On Friday, July 19, westbound I-64, from Kentucky to Indiana, will be closed at or after 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. on Monday, July 22. Eastbound I-64 will remain open during this directional closure. If the closure is delayed for any reason, the backup date is tentatively set for the following weekend.
9-day Directional Closure:
Beginning Monday, August 5, westbound I-64, from Kentucky to Indiana, will be closed at or after 5 a.m. until 5 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14. Eastbound I-64 will remain open during this directional closure. The closure has been delayed from the original date of August 2 to avoid significant impacts to drivers over two weekends.
During the westbound I-64 directional closures, the I-64 westbound exit ramp to Elm Street (Exit 123) will be closed along with the I-264 westbound to I-64 westbound ramp.
While the westbound directional closure is in place, the suggested alternate route will be I-65 and I-265. Regional traffic signs and variable message boards will be posted in the project area well in advance, notifying motorists of the closures and alternate route.
Through traffic that bypasses I-65 will not be able to cross the Sherman Minton bridge. This traffic will be required to exit to I-264 and then Bank Street. Detour/Alternate Route signage will be in place directing traffic back to I-64 eastbound, then continue to I-65 and the designated alternate route.
Additional Lane Restrictions:
Double lane restrictions have been scheduled for the following dates and times on eastbound and westbound I-64. A minimum of one lane will remain open in each direction.
I-64 eastbound restrictions:
- Friday, July 19, at 8 p.m. until Saturday, July 20, at 1 p.m.
I-64 westbound restrictions:
- Friday, July 26, at 8 p.m. until Saturday July 27, at 1 p.m.
During the westbound I-64 double lane restriction, the I-264 westbound ramp to I-64 westbound will be closed.
