Update: Short-term Directional Closure Planned for Sherman Minton Bridge, I-265 Interchange Ramp Closures Scheduled

Weather permitting, a short-term directional closure of the Sherman Minton Bridge is currently scheduled to begin September 13. Eastbound I-64, from Indiana to Kentucky, will be closed at or after 10 p.m. on Friday, September 13, and will reopen around 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 14. If the closure is delayed for any reason, a notification will be distributed identifying new times and dates.

The directional closure will allow crews to work safely as they remove the painting containment platform above eastbound lanes.

During the eastbound closure, the I-64 eastbound entrance ramp from West Spring Street will be closed along with the I-64 eastbound to I-264 eastbound ramp.

While the directional closure is in place, the suggested alternate route will be I-265 and I-65. Regional traffic signs and variable message boards will be posted in the project area well in advance, notifying motorists of the closures and alternate route.

Through traffic that bypasses I-265 will not be able to cross the Sherman Minton bridge.  This traffic will be required to exit onto West 5th Street in New Albany and use the local street system to access I-64 westbound, then continue to I-265 and the designated alternate route.

Additional overnight ramp closures at the I-265 interchanges with I-65 and I-64 will also be necessary following the short-term closure to restore ramp striping to its permanent configuration. Weather permitting, ramp restrictions are scheduled as follows:

  • I-265 westbound ramp to I-64 west will be closed beginning at or after 9 p.m. on Monday, September 23, until Tuesday, September 24, at 6 a.m.
  • I-64 eastbound ramp to I-265 east will be closed beginning at or after 9 p.m. Tuesday, September 24, until Wednesday, September 25, at 6 a.m.
  • I-64 westbound ramp to I-265 east will be closed beginning at or after 9 p.m. Wednesday, September 25, until Thursday, September 26, at 6 a.m.
  • Spring Street ramp to I-64 west will be closed beginning at or after 9 p.m. Wednesday, September 25, until Thursday, September 26, at 6 a.m.
  • I-265 eastbound ramp to I-65 south will be closed beginning at or after 9 p.m. Thursday, September 26, until Friday, September 27, at 6 a.m.
  • I-265 eastbound ramp to I-65 north will be closed beginning at or after 9 p.m. Thursday, September 26, until Friday, September 27, at 6 a.m.  This closure will not occur until the I-265 eastbound ramp to I-65 south has reopened.
  • Rolling roadblocks will be in place beginning at or after 9 p.m. Friday, September 27, until 6 a.m. Saturday, September 28, for all ramps noted above to install rumble strips and reflectors along each ramp.  These rolling roadblocks will occur one at a time.

These restrictions may or may not be in effect for the entire period noted. Motorists should slow down, drive distraction-free and be aware of changing traffic patterns.

Delays are expected and motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible.
