December Closures Scheduled for Sherman Minton Bridge

The Sherman Minton Renewal team has scheduled the mid-December 9-day eastbound I-64 closure to occur immediately following the weekend eastbound I-64 closure beginning on December 8. Eastbound I-64 will be closed on or after 10 p.m. Friday, December 8, and will remain closed until 5 a.m. Wednesday, December 20.  The consecutive closure is necessary for crews to safely demolish and remove the upper bridge deck as part of Phase 4.

During the eastbound I-64 closure, the I-64 eastbound entrance ramp from West Spring Street will be closed along with the I-64 eastbound to I-264 eastbound ramp.

While the eastbound directional closure is in place, the suggested alternate route will be I-265 and I-65. Regional traffic signs and variable message boards will be posted in the project area well in advance, notifying motorists of the closures and alternate route.

Through traffic that bypasses I-265 will not be able to cross the Sherman Minton bridge.  This traffic will be required to exit onto West 5th Street in New Albany and use the local street system to access I-64 westbound, then continue to I-265 and the designated alternate route.

Additional Westbound I-64 Lane Restrictions

During the extended eastbound closures, access to westbound I-64 will be maintained but restricted. Westbound I-64 will be reduced to one lane of traffic as follows:

  • Alternating westbound I-64 Lane Closures (switching from top deck to bottom deck) beginning on or after 8 p.m. Friday, December 8 until 6 a.m. Monday, December 11.
  • Westbound I-64 left lane (bottom deck) closure beginning on or after 8 p.m. Friday, December 15 until 6 a.m. Monday, December 18.
  • Nightly westbound I-64 lane restrictions on weekdays beginning Monday, December 11 through Tuesday, December 19.

Additional Westbound Directional Closures

The following full directional closures of the Sherman Minton Bridge have been scheduled to allow crews to work safely as they implement the traffic shift for Phase 4 and begin demolition activities:

  • Westbound I-64 will be closed over the weekend beginning on or after 10 p.m. on Friday, November 17 until 6 a.m. on Monday, November 20.
  • Westbound I-64 will be closed over the weekend beginning on or after 10 p.m. on Friday, December 1 until 6 a.m. on Monday, December 4.

During the westbound I-64 closure, the I-64 westbound exit ramp to New Albany will be closed along with the I-264 westbound to I-64 westbound ramp.

While the westbound directional closure is in place, the suggested alternate route will be I-65 and I-265. Regional traffic signs and variable message boards will be posted in the project area well in advance, notifying motorists of the closures and alternate route.

Through traffic that bypasses I-65 will not be able to cross the Sherman Minton bridge.  This traffic will be required to exit to I-264 and then Bank Street.  Detour and alternate route signage will be in place directing traffic back to I-64 eastbound, then will continue to I-65 and the designated alternate route.
